I am home hosting a web site. It is just for my educational purposes,I have no traffic,I just want to learn about web sites from the beginning to end.
__________________I am using XP and Apache, setup was pretty easy but now I want to get some more complicated HTML documents in my folder (it is called "htdocs" in Apache). So I was looking around the web for some downloadable HTML files and I came accross this site that helps you modify your HTML files (cost 9.95 a month with 7 days free trial) so I decided to give it a look. This web design site is intended for people who have their sites hosted by professional web servers, not for people who home host (the world does not like people who home host,of so I think). So here is my problem. On the web design site setup page they want to know 4 things, 1 of them I have no trouble with, the other 3 leave me shaking my head. They want to know. 1.Who is your FTP Host 2.What is your FTP Username 3What is your FTPpassword Usually you get this info from the people who are hosting your site but I am hosting my site so I am a bit confused. I called Qwest (where I bought my static IP's from and they told me to put Qwest in for FTP host and told me what they thought I should use for UserName and password but this web design site setup page does not like these values. The last question is where your HTML files are stored (its in htdocs for apache) I have connectivity and I can log on my site from other computers and view HTML files I have created but I cant seem to satisfy this web designs setup page with the correct info Does anyone have any ideas? I have every bit of info about the domain, the IP's ,how the modem is setup, how I set Apache up (just Local host,Local host and my e-mail address) I just wonder what they are asking for and how I can satisfy them. I am a Server 2008 student and am really just playing around seeing how far I can get and maybe learn something. There sure are a lot of roadblocks (not legal ones) its just a activity that you have to know what you are doing and its mainly teach yourself. Thanks

You could just setup a FTP server on your webserver, Filezilla's is easy.

the first thing i would look at is filezilla as its mega easy to setup.
secondly why would you want to use an external design website, just design the site yourself, me - i'm using a cms my friend made lol, to lazy, will start on my own cms soon.

OK guys I will take a look at filezilla,I guess I was getting kind of lazy to think about using a service with pre-made web pages.

Well Steph I sent your team a e-mail,lets try and make this work,no pressure, really just a exercise and learning experience for me.
__________________So its possible that I don't even have a FTP even setup yet, outstanding. When I called Qwest they game me values I know I stored in my modem and they called them FTP settings. I will wait until the web design firm contacts me again since I sent them these values (FTP Host,FTP User Name and Password) if the values I sent them are in a format that makes them impossible to be FTP values I will know I am on to something. I also e-mailed Stephs team at Qwest so I will wait till I get feed back from them. I am not getting stressed at all over this home web site hosting and HTML page creation experience. I chose to do this so I would learn. Many people on many different Forums have been moving me along but progress slow, good thing I am not trying to sell anything. I find I must leave my Microsoft firewall down or I can't talk to my site, I have been told this is a parameter of having a server and a site as how else could anyone talk to the site if a firewall blocked them (adding it to trusted sites didn't make it happen). After I master all about web site hosting with XP and Apache I am moving into UNIX or Linux as OS as I am told XP limits you to only ten (10) people hitting your site at once. At this point I am the only one hitting my site so it doesn't matter. Its hard to manipulate the Apache code as command prompt or DOS commands are not my forte. All I have done so far with the Apache code is tell it where my HTML files are,I wonder if more is needed. Tomorrow in Server 2008 class we will set up individual sites but just in class. I found Server 2008 just to much to work with for this inital attempt. Thanks to all (don't think you have gotten rid of me just yet,and I do OC and I just finished a watercooled rig at the same time I finished my server) Well went to setup FileZilla,it seemed to go OK as all internal tests completed without error but I still could not download from my Web Design site. So I signed up for another 9.95 with Cyberlink FTP Hosting (all they do is FTP hosting not web site hosting). I have come to the conclusion that even a home hosted web site needs FTP Hosting also, the trick was getting it done through the use of freeware. I am using these "pay" sites to kind of teach me the ropes and as soon as I "get it" they get dumped, sorta like paying tution at school. So now I have a reliable FTP host for at least a month, that should give me enough time to figure out why FileZilla was a no go. This stuff is a just jump in and sink or swim, you will learn it sonner or latter.

Enjoy, Are you asking about FileZilla settings? For FileZilla I entered all data as supplied by Qwest. FileZilla said I could pick "any password" ran the connection wizard picked port 270 and gave me the OK with no error messages.
__________________When I entered same settings in this Web Design site that I am trying to download from (using FileZilla as my FTP host) I get a "incorrect ftp settings" error message. I decided (just for now, until I figure what works out) to contract with a FTP host called CyberLink. CyberLink promises to provide me with valid FTP host values to get HTML templets from Web Design and then make sure I can download from them to my htdocs folder in Apache, but I must use another service from Rhino to link me with CyberLink, So I am playing the game and signing up for minimun services and will see if all of us can make this work. Steph Lake from Qwest has contacted me and offered the services of the Qwest team to help me since I am a Qwest customer fory block of 8 static IP's. This speaks very well of Qwest to show such interest in helping me out. I also thank you for showing interest. Getting FileZilla setup is a goal but I just need to get a clue where I am making my FTP host setup errors.Using all these services is expensive and can't go on forever.
