I have a suspicion perhaps it can be verified. When people post about "servers" they are almost always talking about file servers and not web site servers, yes or no?

I have both a file server and a web server in my house. I am in the process of building another web server for a forum I am hosting from home.

you can do file servers, and web servers from home
__________________it really just depends on what kind of demands you are trying to meet to do a webserver you just need to install either IIS on windows or LAMP on linux there are some other options, you are learning to do it then grab something easy like abyss webserver if you need file servers you just gotta setup a smaller box with RAID or something or even a NAS box

For webserver I use linux. For file server I use Windows Home Server. I used Amahi for a while, but I prefer the ease of use that WHS offers.

I am using XP and Apache, with Seru-U as FTP host,Getting Dreamweaver (orders in from school 127.00 price seems OK) It was just as big a blast when I saw my first web page on my site as when I broke through 4.0 on my 955BE. I will move up to linux and check out Amahi. Apache is the #1 HTTP host with IIS in second. I was going to use IIS 7.0 in Server 2008 but my school got wind I was going to use my school version and had a little talk with me, so need my own version. XP and Apache is working out good though.

It sure was a figure it out ourself journey, now I am refining all so I feel comfortable posting address and leave server up all the time. NAS box for storage. I think its a blast hosting at home people react the same when you say your PC is water cooled.

There will always be security flaws in software, you just have to pick something and run with it. Do a bit of research and you'll find out which ones will have less flaws. Personally I run a Windows 2003 for a file server, but my options aren't limited to that. I have ran linux servers, and Unix servers before hosting Apache and IRC servers. Ubuntu is probably one of the most popular flavors of Linux out there today. That and Fedora would fit your needs. I would run with Apache to host your web pages. Since I don't know what kind of network you're using (school, home, enterprise) I can't really comment on a storage solution. NAS might not be the best idea if you're in a school network. If you're at home it should be fine, however if you're hosting important files that would be detrimental if you lose them, I would suggest you get a NAS that supports Raid 1 or Raid 5.
One thing to keep in mind a server simply means a computer that hosts clients or stores data. It's such a broad term, one server can have many roles (ftp, www, AD services, dhcp, heck even host counterstrike etc..). If I'm talking to my colleagues about a server, I would mention what kind of server ie application, file server, or just the server number. That word is used very loosely...
