I am building a home server for the first time. I am needing help on what I should get. I am willing to spend up to 1,000 USD but my max is 1,200 USD, but I would like to keep it as inexpensive as possible but still have a great system. The things I am wondering on, is what Computer case should I get (not a server chassis), motherboard, CPU & Processor, power supply and ether net port. I know what OS I am using which will be CentOS (since I work on servers that use it), I know what type of hard drives I am getting (cavilier black). I am also wondering if I should have a water cooling system on it, along with a fan control panel. If it ends up goin over 850 USD, please tell me. This home server will be used for hosting sites. I know most home connections wont be able to handle uploads, but I will have it covered.
Thank you in advanced. I am doing research on my own and trying to put together my own system, but I am just confused on what I need to get and dont want to forget anything. EDIT--- I kinda just realized that this may end up going over my budget no matter what is made. So I will be willing to see what you can find and I find for around 1,000 to 1,200 USD. I'm pretty sure the most important parts are going to be RAM and Hard drives.

What kind of connection and traffic are you looking at? A simple quad-core + 8GB RAM + RAID0 should be enough to host a few sites.

I'd be more worried about internet bandwidth than the hosting machine itself.
I've seen plenty of sites hosted on a 1.4Ghz Celly with 1GB of RAM and a 250GB disc, hooked up to a 100mBit duplex line.

Need more info - if the sites are relatively small you should be able to have change left over from half your budget...
Definate no to water though - air is best for reliability. Any cheap case should do, as I assume you will only need a few disks. Personally I would probably go with 2 RAID1 sets, one for OS, one for data. But it depends on how important downtime is, and how important power costs are for you. You will need a decent but low power psu - a Corsair 400W unit would be ideal. Caviar Blacks are a decent choice, maybe 4x320GB would be ideal. But it depends on your usage etc - if power cconsumption is your main concern a single SSD might be a better choice. Any Intel or Supermicro board, 4-8GB ECC RAM & low end dual or quad 45nm cpu to finish off & you're all set. |

well i did a lil build on newegg and i can see how you could if you stuck to things that were in the server section
idk if theres a huge difference between a am2 server cpu and a regular am2 cpu lol

I'm sure a Q9400 and a a few good sticks of ram will do you fine. A few WD 640GB in Raid will do you fine.
