Default Someone gave me an intel atom

Hello guys! I'm currently in possession of a D945GCLF2 and would like to turn it into a router. From what I read, pfsense is pretty good so I think I'll go with that, unless if anyone has any other recommendations?

With that being said, is it possible to make a WIRELESS router? My current router is a Netgear WGR614v2 which has wireless capabilities. Can I somehow make my new atom system take over all internet duties by being able to provide wireless access to laptops just like my current netgear router? If so, what kind of additional hardware would I require?

I think all you would need to do that would be an Ethernet cord, I believe you would set it up like I have my network and share from your custom router to the old routers IN port.

Do you need wired ports as well as wireless?

If so you will probably be best using your current router as an access point, and just using the atom board to handle routing, as you need the pci slot for a second network port.

If you just need wireless you should be able to do so with a wireless network pci card. You might struggle to get your current router to act as a modem and ap but not a router.

Is this the same as the "access point" the_beast is talking about?

Thanks, I frequently see untangle being compared with pfsense. I'll go do some more research as to which one I'll go for, but does anyone have experience with both?

Yes, this is exactly what I had in mind. I want to "get rid" of my netgear router and just use the atom for all my routing needs. The problem is that I'm not quite sure how to provide a wireless connection for all the laptops in the house.

From what I understand, I need to somehow turn my netgear router "off" and just be an access point so that all the work is being done by the atom? Since the netgear also has around 4 slots, can I also use it as a switch? Will having the netgear as an access point and switch affect the performance of the atom router, that is, will it bottleneck anything?

Untangle is a very good routing program, it does not support wireless natively but if you have some Linux experience you could add wireless support to it. The next version of Untangle Server is suppose to have built in wireless support. If you use Untangle I would turn off DCHP on the old router and plug it into a switch or directly into the lan side of the Untangle Server.

The problem is that the the Atom can't handle the fancier things like VPN (so you'll be limited to using it as just a basic router). But without the fancier stuff there's no real point to doing it in the first place IMO.

The thing is that the Atom's ALU and FPU are mostly software emulated, so any sort of math processing is slow as hell. So goodbye VPN and virus scanning, at the very least.
