Hello guys! I'm currently in possession of a D945GCLF2 and would like to turn it into a router. From what I read, pfsense is pretty good so I think I'll go with that, unless if anyone has any other recommendations?
__________________With that being said, is it possible to make a WIRELESS router? My current router is a Netgear WGR614v2 which has wireless capabilities. Can I somehow make my new atom system take over all internet duties by being able to provide wireless access to laptops just like my current netgear router? If so, what kind of additional hardware would I require?

Is this what you looking for?
http://www.untangle.com/ Edit: In particular this http://www.untangle.com/Downloads/Download-ISO or http://www.untangle.com/Downloads/Untangle-for-Windows Basically turns a PC into a dedicated router.

Do you need wired ports as well as wireless?
If so you will probably be best using your current router as an access point, and just using the atom board to handle routing, as you need the pci slot for a second network port. If you just need wireless you should be able to do so with a wireless network pci card. You might struggle to get your current router to act as a modem and ap but not a router. |

From what I understand, I need to somehow turn my netgear router "off" and just be an access point so that all the work is being done by the atom? Since the netgear also has around 4 slots, can I also use it as a switch? Will having the netgear as an access point and switch affect the performance of the atom router, that is, will it bottleneck anything?

The problem is that the the Atom can't handle the fancier things like VPN (so you'll be limited to using it as just a basic router). But without the fancier stuff there's no real point to doing it in the first place IMO.
The thing is that the Atom's ALU and FPU are mostly software emulated, so any sort of math processing is slow as hell. So goodbye VPN and virus scanning, at the very least.
