Hey fellas I am thinking of building a server for my home. I also just opened a small business. I created a website under google but eventually I want to remove if from there and run it through my server. I will probably getting 50 hits max a day. Im just kinda confused what is the major difference home server vs web server. I want my home server to be able to host my website and also central location for files (movies, music, etc.). Is that even possible or do I need two servers? Im a noob at this. What software do I need? I currently have 3 computers at home. One runs xp, another vista, another win 7.
__________________Here is what I am planning on building my server with ***E6600 stock cooling for now ***Motherboard from my HP here is the link. it suports RAID 0 & 1. what does RAID 0 & 1 mean anyhow. i never understood that. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...s&lc=en&dlc=en ***4 gb of 667 ram ***2x 500 GB WD (dont remember the exact model) 7200 rpms ***Nvidia GeForce 7350LE thats my setup I will be replacing the motherboard at a later time (will be undervolting the cpu @ 2.4 ghz from 1.3ish to 1.0625 v (already tested on 750iftw) and will also be adding more HD's maybe 2x 1tb or 2x500gb I also have a p4 sitting around. maybe i can use that? I also have a e7200. I was thinking of using that cuz its 45nm and the e6600 is 65nm. Guys I would really appreciate someone to set me straight. It seems like Im running like chicken with its head cut off!!!!!

Lots of questions... A web server is a computer that hosts a website. A home server is generally a media, file, and/or backup server. There's nothing that keeps one machine from doing both. You don't need any special software as most OSes have network sharing features.
RAID are different methods of using HDs to improve performance and/or reliability. RAID0 basically uses multiple HDs to work together and share date so they can transfer data faster. RAID1 basically copies all data to two HDs in case one of them fails. A P4 is more than enough power to run a home+web server. The only reason to go with an underclocked Core 2 instead is to save power.

For the noob (which I consider my self very much one) these can be difficult. In paticular if you make one error in the setup of any of the software you will be using things dont work.
__________________What will you usefor HTTP Microsoft IIS, or Apache,or perhaps something else (for you home hosted web site) Can you write HTML code? If not you will need to learn or buy a product like Dreamweaver. If you use Apache what will you use as your FTP host? perhaps FileZilla (I had some setup issues) or a service like Serv-U,expensive and the lowest end version (Bronze at 195.00 per year or per 2 year) only lets you manage I domain. Are you good at comand line work? with some freeware you wil be using your command line skills. I have recently setup a home hosted web site, all the fees for this and that (it adds up quick) were expensive. Are going to get static IP's or deal with another layer of software and setup to be able to use dynamic IP's. Many will say just use software xxx or yyy but you have to know the function of the software and how it likes to be setup. Don't let me put a detour in your path, perhaps you are much better at the things I mentioned than myself and things go easier for you,my last issue is site security as I am not satisfied whith how things are. Lots on the web about home web site hosting, one article I read said to use your oldest, cheapest, most low end machine as it will be attacked and infected. I did not take this advice. I used desktop PC hardware (some think you need to use dedicated server hardware,I suppose there could come a time) but I did not use really low end stuff (no quad core, just anthlon X2 250 and a DDR3 board) not low end desktop hardware. One thing about rack cases, they have terrible cooling as they are ment to be used in a cool room, get a case with good cooling.
