Default Cheap Media Server Build?

Never thought of doing this before but I'd like to set up a sort of media server. All it would be doing is playing Blu-rays/music and storing music/videos/pictures. What would I want for a build like this? Cheap is good and I'd go AMD for it if it's best.

All you need is a External Hard Drive or convert a Internal Hard Drive into an external.

Interesting, but I need something with a Blu-ray drive and that can be used as storage for all my media. Looking more towards building a system from scratch to do this.

So you want it to double as an HTPC? Or just a server?

And how much space do you think you'll need?

The 60$ Athlon X2 5000+ and the ~75$ ASUS M4A785-M are what I use in my HTPC and it is enough to decode 1080p mkvs as long as you run a hardware offloading decoder. If possible, I would get one of the new Athlon II X2s as mine just barely makes it, going to about 80% load on 1080p mkvs. The 785G chipset, however is amazing and I highly recommend it.

No networking capabilities and it's slow...

Yeah, I want it to double as a HTPC and media server. Storage space I can figure out it's just the other components. I'm not sure what the requirements would be for HD movies and media server duty.

I just found this video card and it seems kind of cool. May be a candidate.

With a good chipset (NVIDIA 9300/9400 or AMD 785G), you don't need a discrete video card.
