Since it has been suggested here I have been doing a little checking out concerning Untangle. My base question was about the two NIC requirement and I was assured the onboard counted as one.
__________________The rep asked what CPU I was going to use and I replied I would be using a Anthlon X2 250,he warned me not to get into the situation of not enough CPU and replied the anthlon would "probably" be enough. This comment really makes me think twice about using a pentium, but plenty of people report pentium power does it for them. I am going to bite the bullet and dedicate my Q6600 rig for my Untangle box. I know most will say way overkill but lets see how it goes for a year and then make the call. The Pentinum rig I have now is short on the required 1gb RAM. I looked on the egg. and couldn't even see a Q6600 listed for sale. I just bought mine 2 years ago and I know plenty of people like the Q6600. Hey its just handling my NetFlicks and BlockBuster work any way might as well give it a real job. If I cancel NetFlicks and TotalVid I will have the money for Untangle tech support, and I usually need this at first Thanks for the Untangle suggestion, looks like a hit for my web site security.

I really think the pentium would have done it for you. Why not install it on the athalon and see how it goes, and save the Q6600 in case it doesn't work out. I know for a fact the Athalon would work for a home network or small business. Is this for a basic home network, or a business class network?

Raptor, Its for a home network that I use just to see if I can make different things I read about work (gave up modding cars) I do hate the thought of using my Q6600 for a Untangle box.
__________________You know I could fit one of those Zotac mini ITX boards (6.7X6.7) in the same 4U case my web server runs. The egg. has a Zotac board for about 100.00 that can use AMD3 CPU's. Running the Untangle hardware in the same case as my server hardware, just a couple hundred bucks would do it. But you really think the Pentium box (its a Dell Dimension 4300) is screaming to be the Untangle box? I would have to look around for some extra ram (it sits at 768 now) these things just keep on working. The Untangle rep. was pushing me to "up" my hardware. Very friendly contact at Untangle, guy spent some time speaking with me.

Oh wow. A Q6600 for a home network
. I personally would try out the Dell as an untangle box before sacrificing your quad. If that doesn't work for you, upgrade to the AMD. A single core with ~1gig of ram would be plenty for a dozen or so home PCs. Thats just my 2 cents.

Ok will drop the Q6600 idea and work on finding some ram for the Pentium,it is only 1.4ghz, or go with the AMD.

A Q6600 with 4GB would support a few thousand systems. Who told you that an Anthlon X2 250 may not be enough? http://wiki.untangle.com/index.php/H...e_Requirements

I'm running it on a Dell GX150 (990-something mhz) The memory is getting tight as I can only address 512m but it's running fine for me.

Dukie, it was the rep from untangle sales, I called them up to ask about the 2 NIC requirements.

If you want a DMZ, you will need a third. BTW, Untangle recently released version 7.0 and some people having issues with the new report module (including me). I recommend you do NOT install the report module until the upcoming 7.0.1 release.
