Networking Nut
|
I have a NAS for two years now, it's just connected to power and Lan, my main thought when building it was Space consume, and simplicity.
for the above reasons I did not connect keyboard, mouse or monitor. so If I need to do something, I use my ultraVNC to connect to the desktop. UltraVNC have a huge problem though that it's only controllable when the NAS is in windows enviourment, so if i'd like to do anything outside of the windows enviourment (like installing a new hard drive, cleaning a virus etc..) i'd need to connect my monitor and keyboard. now I know there's a special switch that allows me to switch my keyboard/monitor/mouse from my Desktop PC to my NAS , but usually I do need them both active at the same time. now to my question - is there a Small device (notebook alike) that just contains a small keyboard/monitor/mouse ? looking for something that can be tucked into a very small space when not in use. budget is about 500$ , so enterprises server rack mounts won't count ![]() Thanks in advance. |

Server rack mount consoles are less than $200 on eBay...

I was looking all over for the same laptop-type thing, but they don't exist
![]() But there are a couple of options for you. 1st, there's duckie's suggestion, which IMO is the best anyway. If you need a cheap rack as well, there's this. 2nd, you can get a kvm over ip. It connects to the kb/mouse/VGA ports on the back of your PC and transmits them over your network to anywhere you want. Add a second monitor on your desk (when you're not configuring the server you can have dual screens on your main PC), and you're good to go. 3rd, you can get VGA over CAT5 and USB over CAT5 adapters, and just hook up a really long connection from your desktop to your server. You'll need a second monitor for this as well.
