I've installed VMWare server on my laptop and set up a VM with Windows Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008. The SQL Server service is running fine, as I can work on it locally (with the server OS), but I'm having trouble figuring out how to set it up so that I can access it from my laptop host OS (Windows 7).

I've set up a local user of the same name on each, and both environments are members of the same workgroup. However, when I try to access the SQL Server instance from the host OS, I get an error stating that user does not exist on the server. Is there a way to get NT authentication to work in a workgroup scenario, or will I have to use SQL Server logins for this?

when trying to access SQL you should be using SQL users not windows users.

unless i'm missing something?

I assumed that SQL Server authentication would work (haven't tried it yet though). I was just trying to determine if there were a way to use workgroup\username or otherpc\username. In this way I could kind of simulate NT authentication on a domain.

SQL Windows Auth will only work on a domain or when logged in directly to the box. When you log in remotely, the credentials from your local machine are passed to your SQL box and summarily rejected because it doesn't recognize those credentials. This is true even if you create identical user names/passwords because the GUID behind the username will be different and will be unrecognized (side note: this is why one should never delete and recreate users - always disable the account instead).

In other words, Windows actually uses the GUID behind the username to pass credentials - not the username itself. Think of it like an IP address vs. URL name. The IP address is what's actually used to connect a computer to a website, but the URL name is the thing that we humans can easily remember so the name is mapped to the IP address.

So, you'll have to reinstall SQL using mixed mode. There's no way that I know of to make this switched once SQL Server is installed. Or, you could create a domain controller and add both of these computers to the domain, then log in with the domain credentials.

Perfect. Then you can access the DB via the SQL user credentials.

But to reiterate the answer to your original question, no you can't use NT/Windows auth to access a remote SQL server without a domain.

Ok, thanks. That's kind of what I figured. At this point, however, I'm having trouble accessing it either way. I have Windows 2008 Server installed in a VMWare Server virtual machine, and I can't even ping it. I'm not an expert on Windows Server, so I'm have a bit of trouble finding the problem. The network is set up as a "Home Network" right now, as opposed to a "Public Location".

What is the network on the VM as? Host-only, Bridged, or NAT?

Well, whatever it is, set it to Bridged.

I made sure the VM network settings were set to bridged (I had played with that setting, trying to find the problem). Still no satisfaction. The funny thing is, my wife can ping the VM server fine from her Windows XP laptop. Soooo, it appears to be a problem with my laptop (the host). The problem is, I've bounced around the network settings on my laptop and can't find where the problem could be.

Any ideas?

Ok, lets go over the simple stuff first:
- Turn off any Firewall software on both the host and VM
- Make sure there's no proxy set in Internet Explorer
- Make sure they're both on the same subnet
- Make sure the server has a static IP (and/or DHCP reservation)
- Flush the NETBIOS cache (nbtstat -R) and ARP cache (arp -d *) and then disable/re-enable the network adapters on both the host and VM

That should get any basic connectivity issues out of the way at least, then we can concentrate on narrowing it down
