THIS IS ONLY AN IDEA AT THE MOMENT. I am bored so I though this up just now... please read and comment. I prefer helpful suggestions/criticism.
So I was thinking about having a server to run 1 game, maybe more if it can do so with no lag. As many as 32-64 players may be on each game. I also want it to be able to handle a personal website if possible. I was thinking maybe renting out the server too if I have enough power to share it. I don't know anything about connection requirements like upload speeds, memory, and processing power, hard drives... etc. Helpful criticism is welcome. Not looking to build now... but was thinking about this build for the future. Case: Antec Twelve Hundred Motherboard: SUPERMICRO MBD-X8DAL-3-O Dual LGA 1366 Intel 5500 ATX CPUs: Two "i7-920" processors. RAM: G.SKILL 12GB (6 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 Hard Drives: 7 WD Caviar Black 500GB drives... 1 will store the OS, the others will be in put into 1 or more sets of RAID 0. Power Supply: CORSAIR CMPSU-1000HX 1000W ATX12V Graphics Card: ASUS EAH5770/2DIS/1GD5 Radeon HD 5770 OS: Windows 7 PRO Internet: Maybe T1... <-- again, would rent some servers... and yes I know it will still be expensive to maintain... this is all just stuff I think about when I am bored. The monitor, keyboard, etc. are not something I am thinking about yet. Yes, I realize I'm into the thousands on this at this point plus maybe hundreds of dollars for connection. For now this is only an idea I am toying with. Also if there are places that I can keep this server at that you know of... let me know.

T1 is only 1.5Mpbs if I recall, 64 players? I wouldn't.

Just wondering, does a antec 1200 even fit an E atx mobo?
other than that everything seems good so far.

If you were to put it in a datacenter, you might have to go with a rackmount chassis, rather than regular case.

![]() not trying to be mean, just constructive... co-locate in a real data center, if you're in the US, use Rackspace. toss the 500gb HDDs... go smaller and more of them -- you can use the onboard controller if you want, but if you want performance you should get a real raid controller, with cache... with a battery... you'll be looking at ~1000-1500 for a Good controller... you don't need a Gaming video card for a gaming server... you don't need 12GB for a game server... those processors won't work with that motherboard those memory sticks won't work with that motherboard get a rackmount case... as a tower will not be efficient in a co-location facility full of racks... get a server grade redundant power supply... as rackspace provides redundant power... a T1 is 1.5mbps... normal co-location facilities will be able to supply redundant 100mbps. i wouldn't even consider a t1 for a home based server these days... check out this case and psu.... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811152057 it doubles as a tower and a 4U rackmount case... this would be better... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811152124 if you go with the 500s.. go for 12-16 of them -- raid 6 array with 10-14 with 2 hot spares... use partitions or volume sets to seperate your array... don't screw yourself with multiple arrays. even though you could have 5 to 7 TB of space... only partition out the first... 100GB or so... or whatever you need for your boot/os/programs... windows 7 is very new... use 2k3 server or 2k8 server if you want stability...

If you want multiple cpus you need to go Xeon. Maybe even look at the 6 core chips, although a new mortgage may be required to pay for them.
For lots of RAM use DDR3 FB-DIMMS - much more reliable, especially when the total RAM goes up. You will definately need the new mortgage by this point. For high I/O go with a couple of SSDs in RAID1 rather than 6 mechanical HDDs, especially if trying to run multiple servers at once. The performance will be much better and the cost similar. Don't use Windows 7 for this - go with Server 2008 R2. It is free if you're a student and only use it for personal use. Few home connections are good for anything more than a couple of casual games. T1 is no good for this, and you could probably co-locate for similar money but get much better service. Don't try and build a server to rent out - you will never make back the extra money you will spend. Someone bigger with more servers will be able to offer anything you can for less money. |

Hey use AT&T Fiber Optics. I got it installed like last month. It runs at 6mbps. Depending on where you live if it is available. Also one modem w/ built in router powers tons of tvs, all house computers and phones. Perfect connection if available.
