Default Remote monitoring cpu usage and memory

What's the easiest way to monitor CPU and memory and maybe network usage on a remote machine?

I have physical access to the servers so installing a client on them is no problem at all.

Both are running XP, but I could upgrade to Windows 2008 if there's any advantage for this.

Thanks, I've google searched and found nothing that's not ridiculously expensive or over the top.

Install SNMP Informant, then configure MRTG to monitor memory, CPU, and network usage. You can also monitor many other aspects of the system from MRTG, including disk I/O, Disk space usage, etc.

You could install the resource monitor from the server resource kit:

If you change to Windows Server you can simply use the Resource Monitor. There's an option there to connect to other servers.

How much detail do you need?

Can you not just remote desktop or VNC into the machine & check everything as you would locally? Or do you need logging etc?

Yeah that is what I'm doing at the moment.

I'd like for windows 7's performance monitor to work with connecting to another computer though.

Everytime I try and connect it simply says the network path cannot be found, this is for either of them.

Try looking into Big Brother (www.bb4.org)?
