Default Windows Home Server

Is it a good idea to use scrap parts (Pentium D, Hp Mobo+4gb. ddr2 ram) and add in the rest (case, hdd, psu, etc.) for a home server? I was thinking about either building a home server for my house, or for my dad's business, and have his files backup from his 4 computers every now and then. Should I use home server even if its for a business?

Btw, I am not really apt about the software side, I just know a lot about the hardware side.
I will be using this, http://www.maximumpc.com/article/fea...ain?page=0%2C0 if I do do this.

And, if I wanted to access this from another state, or from my house, how would I access it from the internet?

There's nothing wrong with those parts... just a bit power hungry. 2GB is enough.

Windows Home Server actually wants to change its name.... they are now trying to sell it for small businesses as well. The only limitation is that it can backup only 10 PCs total (not an issue in your case). By default it does incremental backups every night.

MS provides a domain for you. You just have to make up own name... [yourmachine].homeserver.com

After logging in remotely, you can either download/upload files to your server or remote desktop (must be XP/Vista/Win7 Pro or better).

Only thing I don't like about WHS is the 2gb file upload limit

You can install 3rd party apps or FTP as an alternative.

The limit isn't due to WHS.... it's a limitation of MS IIS.

I'm loving my WHS. I wanted a super power efficient build so I opted for an Atom build and after pricing up the parts I decided to just pick up the Acer Easystore H340. It only has a single core Atom cpu, but it comes with 2Gb RAM and 1TB WD Green hdd already installed. It works great. Automatically backs up both my computers daily and is handy for streaming music/photos.
