Default Low watt Server.

Laptop? Netbook? Desktop Atom??

Just for torrenting, and ftp server. (Also Remote desktop).

I thought about NAS but i think it would be to much of a hassle.

Suggestions?

Look for below 85 watt solution.

I actually think a NAS would be easier and faster to setup than a whole system, actually. Besides, it'll use much less power.

But i just can't find a enough info if a nas is right for me.
Here is the list of what I need it to do.
Download torrents direct to it.
Has access to it over the internet.
Media devices and or computer can get stream media (Xbox 360 ,PS3 and other computers.)
Doesn't need any additonal software to use it. Just needs a IP.

I'm just not sure if you can stream media over a NAS, but I'm sure it can do all the others.

Some good NAS can do everything you need (like the Thecus, ad example), but usually a nas with a good software and capable of all you need is more expensive than a desktop Atom custom built Server.

If you don't need a lot of HD (max 2 or 3), you can buy an Atom Motherboard (the ION isn't necessary for your scope. you can buy the old Intel chipset; it's cheaper) with a small case.
You can find MB with single core Atom and also with the 330 dual core.
I suggest you to use Linux as OS (if you don't know linux you can use a ready distribution as OpenNAS or FreeNAS).
If later you need another functionality, you can simply add the correct program to the server (if you buy a NAS, usually you can't add custom software to it).

If you need more power and more disks, you can buy a low-end AMD or Intel MB and processor. Some guys on this forum told that a similar solution consumes about the same power of an Atom (in my opinion the Atom is better, but if you need more power and more SATA ports an AMD is probably a good choice).

For my internet download and service I'm actually using a dual core Atom 330 intel motherboard with a 2.5" sata HD (it's silent and takes less power than a 3.5" HD) with Linux on it. I'm running on it 2 different Azureus, an eMule client, Samba, logging, mail and ftp servers. It's takes about 45 watt (at the wall plug).

I know linux but I people goin in out of the house access the media.
So I don't think that is best. Good Idea no doubt.

I think I going to go atom since 45 watt sounds nice but I need about 1tb of storage.

And what's the problem ? It's Windows that can't do something that Linux does, not the opposite...

It needs less ram and is more stable. My server is on since I returned from holiday (june) and I never rebooted it since.

Don't forget that virtually every OS on routers or NAS on the market it's simply a customized version of Linux.

The problem is everyone connecting to linux server.
My friends machine's yeah my machines yeah

My brothers laptop unknown
His friends unknown
His girl friend and her friends laptops.

My dad and his friend's laptops.

It a connect issue.

And I already know how to do windows networking better than linux.

And I know linux would be a better time but as of late I'm tight on time and need a now solution.
