Thanks for the clarification anyway, going to just slam my old 7300GT in there, along with 2GB of 667, and an E2180/2220 from OCN, probably.

Why a graphics card at all? Other than just to install windows etc
I remember my old server had to have a graphics card in or it wouldn't boot though (ATX so no onboard) so I bought a PCI card for <$10

What mobo do you have? As above, the cheapest pci graphics you can find (eBay, junk boxes, friends, granny's etc) is usually the lowest power option & will allow the system to boot. Look for a card with no heatsinks on it - they will cost peanuts to run, but your 7300 will likely eat its way through ~£30/yr just idling. If your board will boot without graphics then just remove the card you have to save the power, but be prepared to have to replace it if you ever need a local console again because of OS issues etc.
As for a cpu - a new E3300 Celeron Dual Core will likely be faster than an E2xxx cpu, and may even be cheaper, plus you get the warranty. Depends on your board as to whether it will work though. |

It's an OEM Acer board produced by ATi, have asked previously but noone can identify it. It supports 800MHz FSB Chips and up to 65NM dual cores, as well as 667MHz ram and PCI graphics. I really would prefer a dual core, as it'll be used for light gaming until I build my 1156 system sometime in March next year and after I get bored of it being a server; probably a NAS drive and Media centre.

If I were setting one up, I'd use Linux and a cheap core 2 duo system with 4GB, onboard GPU. Google "source linux dedicated server". Can be done on the cheap this way.
