Default Clicking noise from floppy drive

I'm not sure if this is the absolute best place to put this, but it's the only one I can think of.

I got the Mitsumi 6-in-1 card reader/floppy drive combo for Christmas (along with a new CPU cooler), and after undertaking to install everything, my computer was making an odd ticking noise (~5 ticks/second). Naturally, I figured I'd managed to get something in one of my fans, or perhaps a blade was hitting an assembly (especially since I did just install a new fan after all). Well, I proceeded to stop each and every one of my fans individually, but to my chagrin not a one of them affected the noise in the slightest. I also tried applying pressure to my hard drive to see if it might be having problems, but again nothing happened. This was when I started scratching my head - then remembering the laws of change, I figured my other new components (floppy drive/card reader) might be doing something crazy, so I unplugged it, and miracle of miracles, the noises ceased.

Now, I have discovered that I can hook up the USB connector and have the card reader running without the noise - but the floppy drive just doesn't want to run without ticking. It works just fine, but I really can't stand this noise in my rig. Any ideas on this? Should I just send the thing in, or is there something I might have missed that is causing this noise? I've tried screwing it in tighter in case it was a vibration (and it sounds much too slow to be that anyway), but to no avail.

Yes indeed - and with a floppy in there as well.

Indeed, it sounds like (bad pun) it's defective. Although personally, before sending it back I'd whack it a few times. I wouldn't recommend that though.

Well, if I'm going to send it back anyway a good whack won't hurt. I've still got my old floppy drive, I can use that until I can get a new one. Thanks for the help gents, I'm glad I got this sorted.

Now for the biggest problem with receiving an OEM drive for Christmas - how to RMA it.

Good decision: send it back while it is still new and easy to return.

Having one has come in handy more times than one - I like to keep one around (hell, I've probably got 5 or 6 working floppy drives in my apartment) just in case, but having one with a card reader is nice so my wife can put her pictures on the computer.

Why do you have a floppy drive? I banned floppy drives from my computer unless i'm upgrading my bios then i just instal it and put it on the side of the case. Do us all a favor disconnect the floppy cable and just use the card reader
