I have had a Seagate 7200rpm 80gb hdd for 3 years and the since last year it has been a pain in the ¤"#!%"¤# because of somekind of ultrasound that somehow only in can hear i my family. i've tried to remount it or tighten the screws, but it's still the same...Any ideas why it makes that sound, oh and it only does it when idle...

Wahey just the thread I needed. The Seagate 7200.11 looks the one for me then as I am also in the market for a silent HDD.

My Samsungs are both near silent, and CyberDruid sells some neat 3.5" to 5.25" vibration dampening convertor thingys - I've got some similar Revoltec ones and they are awesome.

I have a 250gb 7200.10 Seagate as well, and it's barely audible. I hear a slight clicking sound during drive access, but no whines or anything.
