im looking to silence a computer in my room and im looking for a material to line the inside of my case to help with sound. i dont want to go out of my way to order a sound proofing material. i just need makeshift household ways. all i have at the moment is cork sheets and 1/8" foam sheets. thanks for tips

Maybe a layer of each. Cork underneath Then foam on top of cork. That way you target both low and high-range noise.

i would put the foam on the case first because i would think (just logic) that the cork might cause vibrations on the case it self if the frequencies were close to being right. plus then by the time the sound has passed through the cork, the foam would pick up all the very high and low frequencies that the cork would have missed (mainly high) as they have a lower wavelength. try both and see which works best? probably wont make any difference at all lol :P

If you want to buy anything, the tar paper used for roofing works well to deaden sound (very similar to that Dynamat stuff), and is dirt cheap.

Unless the foam is acoustic dampening foam, it probably won't do much. You need high density foam or else it won't make a difference other than pad the inside of your case.

The cork and foam combination would probably work best, but again, it depends on what that foam is like.

I've used Craft foam in computers before, I haven't tried it specifically for sound deadening, but it's non-conductive and you can get it in several different colors and in various thickness for relatively cheap.

I think the foam will do better, it has mroe air pockets, so the sound and vibrations wont transmit well.

Like an above user said use high density foam... if nothing else use both the cork and foam if you can't get the high density foam.

Just make sure you keep an on your temps.... some people have put similar items in their case and it makes a great insulator and the temps rise quite a bit.
