Ok, so this probably won't "silence" your hard drive, but it does eliminate a bit of noise, especially in my Antec 900. Basically, all you do is put a piece of electrical tape along each side of your hard drive, then screw in your screws to puncture the tape that's over the holes on the sides. Then you're all set! Stick your hdd back in your PC (even in a 3.5-inch bay) and you should notice it's a bit quieter than previously.
I'm not sure if there are differences in electrical tape thickness, but it should be thick enough to absorb some vibrations.

Thanks! I was trying to find a solution for quieting down my hard drive while still using the 3.5-inch hard drive bay in my Antec 900. This seems to do the trick quite well.

You can also do this for side panel rattling. You can use layers of the normal tape or get some of the 1/16" thick kind. Been doing this for years...

True story: I once used electrical tape and tissue paper to stop my car's trunk and interior from rattling with 6 subwoofers installed.

I must have uber-tape or something, because it hasn't caused me any troubles yet even after remounting my hdd a couple times after that.

You are probably using low-quality tape, actually. Less glue means less durability. And you can't count the tape as old unless it's been on there for a lot longer than a couple months.

If you use the White electrical tape you will notice when you take it off that there is a lower/less noticble amount of resin left behind. It's not as pretty but it's all i use.
