I know I can get a mic and watch the DB level, however it is inconsistent since it depends on the microphone and settings and etc. How can one test out have good results?

you need to find a friend with a decibel meter. that would work and it would be an independent device not connected to the computer so you could move it around and get better readings and not worry about software/hardware settings affecting the results.
edit: I have no idea how much they are, my dad used to have one but I don't remember the price of it.

With your ears. If the noise bothers you, then you know it's too loud. Unless you want a technical reading of your computers loudness, then get yourself a decibel reader.

my pc is loud i know that quiter than my 360 but not as quite as my ps3 so in between i think that is quite enough your best bet is finding a desible reader some where if u are at school ask your school if they have one or any places near you that what i would do as i work in a school :P or if you cant do that and cant afford anything look at your components and serch them on the net and contact the manufacture to see if they hav ethe Db readings and find out that way

Just grab a decibel meter and then you can test it - make sure there is little background noise though ![]()

The radio shack db meter will work just fine for this app.. If you have a friend that works at a car stereo shop, they will have access to a really nice db meter. Placement of the mic will be very important, so compare readings from the same mic placement in relation to the case.

the rat shack meter is pretty good. You can also use it to properly set up your home theater
