I really didn't have a clue where to put this thread, so I figured it would be ok to put it in silent computing, since that is the eventuality of the project that I am running.

I'm looking for a VIA nano 1.6-1.8 GHz board with a very specific feature. The original referance designs provided by VIA to reviewers had a CF slot on the underside of the motherboard. I'm looking for a retail board with that feature and I can't seem to find it anywhere. I'm planning on putting a 80GB iPOD hdd in as my booting drive (or maybe just a CF card) and making a custom router. Perhaps will be getting two and making both a custom router and an HTPC. Someone point me in the right direction. I love the VIA platform and think it's a vastly superior solution to atom, I'm jsut worried about the pricing and finding the correct feature.

Hoping to spend no more than $150, but the cheaper the better.

Although you should look into the Intel Atoms, as you can get them for at least $70.

I know you love the VIA platform, but as seen, the Atom is cheaper.

I have a 2GB CF card with a 40-pin and 44-pin IDE adapter if interested. 40-pin is the standard desktop IDE while 44-pin is the standard laptop IDE and provides power as well.

Which is a sub-$120 option. I just don't think that it has the CF adaptor built in..I want to keep the built in option so I can run other devices through the IDE if needed (like dual DVD drives for quick-copy)

If I have to, I'll go the route of the atom, but I really want to be able to have PCIe capability instead of the pokey PCI interface for a TV-tuner (if i decided to go that route) On top of that, the VIA handily outperforms the Atom in nearly every test.

There are other mITX Intel mobos than the Atom....

I got MSI Fuzzy 945GME2 + 1.4GHz Core CPU + 1GB DDR2 for $80 shipped off eBay.

This mITX mobo is a socket M and supports a laptop CPUs upto a Core 2 Duo. It has THREE 1Gb NICs, 16x PCIe, 1x PCIe, and PCI. It has onboard vidoe with an onboard LCD controller and audio amp.

I can;t find a deal at all like that on teh interwebz. Anywho, I may have to go with the atom architecture if I want to go with a fanless solution. I really didn't want to though. i wanted at least a PCIe slot .

I see that. Why can;t they just use the netbook chipset in a desktop solution. The Dell mininote 9 doesn;t need a fan. i mean seriously. Having an inefficient, hot northbridge kinda defeats the purpose of a quiet, energy efficient, passively cooled processor.

Back to the effin drawing board. I mean seriously. Is it so much to ask for a low-powered, fanless computing solution that isn't 10 years old? I really don't need any sort of fast performance. I wonder if I could find a passive HS for that northbridge.

The Dell Mini 9 uses the same exact chipset and gets hot to the touch. It's heatsink is the entire keyboard area.

Just mount a 120mm fan at 600RPM over the motherboard. 100% passive system freak me out. You can't tell if they are on or not!
