I was at Autozone (or was it Adv Auto) the other day and I was looking at their spray paints while waiting for someone to help me with spark plugs and I came across cans of Sound Dampening Spray that says its paintable.
I've used foam with an adhesive before on other cases but wanted to paint this build's insides (neon green I think) will this spray Sound Dampening help at all? Is it a wash or help? ![]() Look forward to any help you can provide.

Probably a wash.
Absorption and vibration reduction are the two main ways of noise reduction. A spray would be too thin for absorption of anything except ultra high frequencies. A spray wouldn't be heavy or stiff enough to reduce vibrations.

I can understand the idea of thickness and sound absorption (check out a recording studio?), but I know that the auto industry uses spray sound damp material for underbodies and other nooks / crannys that you can't dynamat.
I guess what I like the most is that it is paintable. Prob look more for permissions

Just in case anyone will ever look at this post for their own information - do not use the sound deadening spray. It will work for sound deadening but it will expand on contact (think spray foam). Thank goodness I tried it on a scrap piece first. Expanding might sound like a good idea (effect vs sound) but it is hard to get a reasonable coat (ie even) out of a spray can.

At least the stuff I tried, I actually did try to sand it. The problem I experienced was that it did not come off cleanly (think about sanding wood filler or something - where there is a smooth surface afterwords). This stuff would pit and then pick up a chunk out of the mat.
Other, more premium brands might work better -- I am a cheapskate after all. Also, I do think the spray from might have places it would work well, just not in a place you want exposed to open view (i.e. behind a window on the MB tray). Good thoughts though.

If I may chime in, "spray-on" anything will be a huge P.I.T.A. compared to an easy alternative: installing soft, porous "acoustic" foam. EDIT2: Look at this post for great sound foam stuff.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acoustic_foam With spray foam, you have to make a mess, the spray will be uneven and require shaping, and cleanup afterward will also be a PITA. You might even have to scuff the metal to get the foam to stick to it. Foam; you just measure, cut, and paste (tho not as easy as in notepad.exe) ;-P Heh. You want to load the surfaces with the heaviest, densest material possible.
