__________________(Based on my laptop and desktop...) or there are also some quiet 3.5" hard drive..?? Should I go for a SSD for primary then add a 2.5" or portable hard drive for storage? Thanks..

Any 5400rpm 3.5" drive would be quieter. I have a Western Digital 500gb Caviar green and its almost inaudible

the slower HDDs like the WD greenpower drives i think are rather quite.
SSD is the quietest. Only thing is with the 2.5" drives, they are expensive and compressively small (500gb max)

2.5 inch drives are quieter than 3.5 inch drives.

so 5400rpm 2.5" vs 5400rpm 3.5".....the 2.5" is also better?

Well, smaller machines are naturally quieter.

I honestly don't think HDD's are such an issue with sound these days, excluding the ones made for gaming. I used to have a WD Caviar green, and it was pretty much silent, and now I use a WD Caviar black...sometimes I can hear the "whrrr-crrr-whrr" sound when I'm downloading files or doing a virus scan, but other than that it's pretty much silent. (To be fair, I have a p182, so it has the rubber stoppers to help reduce noise from vibrations)
__________________I hear the Velociraptor's are even fairly quiet these days...just don't get a raptor! Also, yeah, if you can afford an SSD, then why not? Not only is it going to be quiet, but you're going to see a perfomance increase as well. I personally wouldn't buy one unless I was getting an SLC (single level cell), as they are vastly superior to the MLC, lasting WAY longer.
