Default Making a fan adapter with a resister inline to slow fan

I have two of these fans. http://www.endpcnoise.com/cgi-bin/e/...nexus92mm.html

I was wondering if someone more knowledgeable than myself regarding the fundamentals of electricity could help me build one of these
http://www.acousticpc.com/zalman_3pi...or_56_ohm.html
to lower the rotational speed of my fans and thus make them quieter.

I thought that making my own might be a little cheaper, but I haven't priced resistors at Radio Shack yet. Also I figured it could be better tailored to the specific specifications of my fans.

Can anyone out there tell me how to lower my fan speeds about 33% using this method?

EDIT: Found that adapter a bit cheaper http://www.endpcnoise.com/cgi-bin/e/std/sku=rc56.html May just buy two of them and replace the resistor if/as needed.

Don't use a resistor.... the amount they lower the fan speed varies on current. Instead, use a Zener diode. The voltage drop on these are consistent. A 5v Zener Diode will drop the supply voltage by 5v.

If you want adjustable fan speed, you need a rheostat or variable resistor. Just make sure the component is rated for at least 3-5w or it will burn out.

You can buy specific parts online at sites like www.mouser.com or www.digikey.com

I'm going to give that 7v trick on the link you gave me a try since I can do that right now.

Thanks
