Amazon ships OEM hard drives and optical drives in these wonderful cushioned pads and I was wondering if they could be used to dampen sound? If so, is it as good as the stuff you have to pay for

Yes you can use those, but those wont probably work as good as the stuff you have to pay for

It won't be that good as it has reasonably low density. It'll help a bit, but you'd be better off buying some Acousti-Wool type stuff.

Ah, cool. I'm not really looking to pay to silence my case but since these won't really block airflow it won't hurt to use them instead of throwing them away. +reps

Yeah it's pretty low density stuff, I don't think it would dampen very well. But you never know until you try!

Okay, Here's what I did - 1. I set up my chair at a certain distance from my speakers, sat up straight, put my music to a LITTLE bit softer than what I was capable of hearing over my computer's noise. 2. I put one of the pads covering my front drive bays, put another in the back/top area of my case(cooler master HAF 932) and 1 on the floor between my PSU and hard drive cages. 3. I sat back in my chair as carefully as possible, sat up straight and could hear music. ![]() Maybe I'll have something to do later today. Sleepy time now. 2:20 AM Thanks again everyone.

Maybe if you squeeze it in between 2 metal plates it has higher density and it will dampen a bit better.
