They are quiet because the BTX form factor is pretty awesome. Too bad it never really caught on.

have you ever tried cooler master ultra quiet fans, I am loving them. Got them brand new for 4.99 each 120mm with blue leds. Oh yea they were definitely on sale lol.
also, i noticed that about my moms dell, no noise at all lol. tell you what small fans and 500 rpms dont make much noise at all haha.

Did you run them at full blast or what? Dell's usually never run them that fast.

Your problem may be due to your fan control - it is never a good idea to try and keep fans really low until thinks get hot - you then have your fans trying to chase to get things cool again, resulting in them running faster for longer than really necessary.
Try increasing your idle fan speeds a little, and you may find they never spin up at all, and thus the system stays quiet all the time. The main problem people usually have when trying to silence things whilst keeping decent cooling is that they don't pay good enough attention to the airflow in their case. Double check where everything is going in your case, minimise any obstructions (fan grills, cables, anything in the path of the air). Sort out your air paths properly and you will be halfway towards silence. Dell manages this quite well (although the fact they don't use big GPUs gives them a head start...). |

Reasons why Dell computers are (sometimes) more quiet:
No discrete graphics card, or one that is really low end and passive. No overclocking. Plastic covered metal blocks more noise than plain metal. Power saving options (such as EIST) are left enabled, unlike many enthusiasts/gamers. Components are allowed to run hot as long as temperatures stay within limits. For instance I see many posts in various forums where people freak out when their CPU load temps go above 50șC and idles above 30șC. The fact is that a modern stock clocked CPU can easily run at 80șC or higher, plus Dell does not design their systems to be able to sustain 24 hours of OCCT. They design their systems for "normal" people browsing social networking sites and watching Youtube videos.

I got it to use for parts so i never actually used it and don't know if the combo fan blew in or out of the case my HTPC is similar. power supply has a fan and the cpu fan blows across the heatsink and straight out the back of the case it's a Shuttle SG33G5B

I had to point a house fan at the first (and only) Dell I owned about 10 years ago to keep it from crashing in the summer. They're quiet because the cooling in them sucks donkey di... well, you know, I guess what I'm trying to say is the cooling isn't very good

Dell's run at 100% if they need to. But they actually run much much cooler than most people assume. While some may complain that they run too hot, I have seen dell's that are 10 yrs old, and older... So they are doing okay.
