The reason that there are few viruses for OSX/any of the unix OS's is not because they have low market share. Script kiddies are in it for the ego - and what would give somebody more rep than to create the first self-propagating Apple virus? The reason is that in order for malicious code to do anything on unix, not only do you have to download and execute the code manually, but you need to do it as root. Otherwise if may mess up your files, but the system will be intact.

If microsoft moves over to some kind of unix derivative they will solve innumerable problems that they currently have

On the subject of Vista..I do hope it does well, it looks set to be a sweet OS once it's on it's feet.

We stuck with OS9 for at least a year... heck, we still have two machines at the shop that dual-boot...

With Vista you have to approve anything that runs. OR if something does want to install and do something to the core system files or registry it will either block it or ask you to install it. Vista is locked down like no other. Even with UAC off it still warns you about installing certain programs/drivers. Also what would be the point in creating a virus for Unix or OSX? Like I said before, if you want to target something, your gonna want to target the most amount of people. Creating a Virus for Unix or OSX could be just as easy as creating one for Windows. Many of the virus now-a-days are installed through malicious programs that people download and install willingly. Many of the ActiveX spread viruses are of the past. If you get a user who does not know what they are doing, anyone can get a virus. Also they are called hackers for a reason, they find a back door and use it.

meh - it shipped with raw sockets api enabled, Netbios bound to tcp/ip with File and printer sharing ENABLED thus enabling access across the WHOLE INTERNET.

Check http://www.grc.com/dos/winxp.htm

I think you should turn around and make your boss aware that Vista wont be having Service Packs, it downloads and updates itself (if you so wish) in smaller chunks, so why wait?

Been very worthwhile compatibility updates so far too. x64 compatibility is making real progress.

The new update process in Vista is a massive improvement.

Yep. Vista is NOT the compatability nightmare that so many claim it is. Oh wait, I take that back if you own anything by nVidia.

Vista FTW!

Just a point of view:

http://www.roughlydrafted.com/RD/RDM...19B6FF352.html

http://www.roughlydrafted.com/RD/RDM...BFA442BED.html

Windows Ultimate = $378.99 (from NewEgg)

Windows Ultimate Upgrade = $249.99 (from NewEgg)

Additonal Licenses (I think up to five computers)
Windows Vista Ultimate Full = $359.00

Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger
Single User Pack $129
MultiUse Pack (Up to 5 computers) $199

Windows Vista costs 194% more than OSX (Single User)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Windows Vista costs 271% more than OSX (Multi User)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PC's cost more than Macs as well! Where's all the PC outrage about PC's costing more than Macs!!!!! Oh, yeah that's right PC users live in an alternate reality.

PC Users smoke crack, play PC games on $4,000 computers, and drink Jolt. Knock, Knock - reality is calling.

I got my copy of Vista Ultimate, x86 & x64 media included, retail version, NIB, on eBay for just under $300. It's been going for less than that, actually.

Have to take care that you're purchasing from a reputable seller, preferrably allowing returns in 7 days, etc.

No reason to pay MSRP or just below MSRP for software.
