Default New iPhone Update IS Bricking iPhones

BBC news is reporting that iPhones are becoming inoperable because of the software update.

Quote:
Earlier this week Apple said a planned update would leave the device "permanently inoperable".
Quote:
That warning has now proved correct as many owners are reporting their phones no longer work following installation of the update.
Quote:
Some owners are reporting on technology blogs and Apple's own forums that the update is deleting contacts information, as well as photos and music, on iPhones that have not been modified in any way.
Source: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/7017660.stm

Personally, I don't think this is right. Phone companies should make the phone and we should be able to choose our network. Opinions?

All you have to do is force your phone into restore mode, and reflash it, then use the original AT&T sim that came with your phone. If you have unlocked and are using another provider then you should know better than to update your phone (until hackers find a way around it).

It's really no big deal.

Except... there are reports of un-modded phones getting bricked or files being deleted.

We should defionately be able to choose our network independently from our phone. Right now I have this godawful razr, which I must say is one of the worst phones I have ever had, and I don't want to get a new phone yet because there are no decent phones that work on the Verizon network. When will there be complete freedom of choice in these things?!? Isn't this kind of like if Microsoft were to make internet browsing only possible through IE if you want to use their OS, and using Firefox or Opera would destroy your computer?

This just proves that, nowadays, you are not buying something physical. You are buying a legal contract. In other words you are not buying an iPhone, you are buying the right to use it. Screw with it outside the contractual rules and you are hosed.

I wonder how long until we have to renew an annual subscription to live.
