Default Winamp's 10th Anniversary Version Edition Will Challenge ITunes

Eliot Van Buskirk
October 10, 2007

Quote:
The Winamp media player app, used by 62 million people last month, will be 10 years old next month, having since become part of AOL when Justin Frankel sold Nullsoft in 1999, dipped in popularity when Apple released iTunes in 2001, and since become more popular than iTunes outside the United States, according to Matt Callaway and Sam Weber, the product and business directors for AOL's Winamp and Shoutcast products.

The team has been working on today's Winamp 5.5 release for about a year, with iTunes firmly in its crosshairs. According to Weber, Winamp's position within AOL is stronger than it has been in years, because AOL is no longer selling music (remember AOL MusicNet?) and is now "purely an audience business." As a result, the Winamp team was free to add MP3 blog integration and remote music access features that companies such as Apple, who must placate their major label partners, must avoid by necessity.

Version 5.5 is scheduled to launch at 10:10 am on 10/10, but a beta version should be available here starting at around 1 pm today. The new design mirrors that of iTunes, making it easier for users of that application to make the switch, while still offering the under-the-hood tweaking and customization that the hardcore Winamp faithful has long embraced.

Winamp can play, organize, and sync your (unDRM-ed) music to an iPod just like iTunes can. But the new the 10th anniversary version has a bunch of other new tricks up its sleeve that could attract lots of Windows iTunes users

Hey that's cool. I'll give it a try when I get home. I'm picky on my players though, as I use my PC for HTPC functions as well.....I normally use Windows Media Player with all my H264 codecs.

Have they cracked the new ipods yet so they can be used on other players apart from itunes?
