Default Congressman to Comcast: Stop interfering with BitTorrent

Quote:
On Tuesday, I discussed the issue of Comcast's anti-BitTorrent "network management" with Rep. Rick Boucher, D-Va., who is a strong supporter of consumer rights and has led the battle to undo the damage caused by the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, or DMCA.
Quote:
He was named Politician of the Year for 2006 by Library Journal, largely due to his efforts to protect the fair-use doctrine and expand Internet technologies to rural areas.
Quote:
"Comcast has made a major mistake in attempting to hinder peer-to-peer file sharing as an aspect of its network management," Boucher said. "The inability of customers to (share files) significantly diminishes their ability to utilize the Internet for one of its most important applications, which is user-to-user content." He also noted that "file sharing is already being used for a wide variety of perfectly lawful and appropriate applications."

I don't understand how Comcast can't control QOS (quality of service) on their infrastructure. QOS has been out for over 10 years. All they need to do is prioritize Bittorrent traffic so it doesn't get in the way. I'm confused.

No, why would they want something that actually helps us? All they want is money, and it probably looks good to the "goody goody" people when they see Comcast extremely hinders "baddies".

Comcast can suck it, i dont see how they could ever think this would fly.

I think that there should be some sort of body that discerns between quality of service control and controlling bandwidth (negatively) simply to prevent them from having to upgrading their hardware to strengthen the network due to increasing network load. This increase in network load could be due to bittorrent activity (doubtful), or it could be to adding new customers on the infrastructure.....I think that the latter would be more likely considering the ratio of the bittorrent network traffic versus general subscriber traffic.
This is something that can only be analyzed by network engineers that have access to Comcast's (and other companies') network resources as well as monitored by this governing body.
