With new UI's for Operating systems such as Windows Vista and Mac OS X 10.5, programs such as Firefox begin to look old compared to the new sleek UI's these new Operating systems have. So Mozilla has announced that they will implement a new UI to correspond with each OS which means a seperate UI for, Windows XP, vista, Mac OS X, and various linux distros.

“Personally I think a unified cross platform UI results in applications that at best feel foreign everywhere, and at worst don’t even feel like real applications.” Alex Faaborg said.

Applications that don’t fit the design of an OS stand out like a sore thumb and users shy away from them.

“The Web browser is an incredibly central piece of the user’s operating system, and we don’t want the user’s initial reaction to be that they have modified their computer to add some type of strange, foreign application,” Faaborg writes.


It may seem difficult but the team has already shown mockup screenshots of what may appear in Firefox 3. some UI differences may be minor such as Xp to vista where different icons appear and a plastic look for xp and a shiny look for vista. Firefox for Mac OS X has the biggest change on how it corresponds with the the common user interface of OS X.

But there may be a downside seeing as Firefox may loose its brand identity and look and feel it had for many years.ut Faaborg isn’t worried about that because he says Firefox’s identity comes more through its features than its interface. Faaborg points out that when Firefox 1.0 shipped, most responses centered around tabbed browsing and add-on capabilities, not the appearance of the icons.

if i install something,i know what i install, and the idea of something being foreign, what is this?a human body with on immune system that eradicates everything "foreign"?
