In his latest blog post the chief executive of Sun, Jonathan Schwartz, offered "heartfelt congratulations" to Google on the announcement of its new Java/Linux phone platform, Android.

He went on to say "I'd also like Sun to be the first platform software company to commit to a complete developer environment around the platform, as we throw Sun's NetBeans developer platform for mobile devices behind the effort."

Sun Microsystems has had an off-on-off-again relationship with Linux over the past five years ranging from mini Linux-powered servers that never took off, to building its desktop on Linux before deciding that OpenSolaris was the way to go. How and to what degree Sun will embrace the Android project only time will tell.

In the same posting, he wrote: "I'd like to offer a similar shout out to our friends at Red Hat Linux - who today announced their support for the OpenJDK project. With friends like Google and Red Hat, it sure seems like the momentum behind Java's on the rise..."

this is great news with Suns help i think google will have a great product. this is going to be really cool.

I need a new phone because my Nextel 680i works like **** now.

This or the Iphone I may go for. I have yet to decide. On one hand this looks nice but is far off. Other hand I hate Apple and I would have to do some hacking/modding. >.<
