Instead, when most people hear/see/read the term "hacker" they immediatley think of someone who breaks into another persons computer, writes malicious code etc. And I think the people to blame for that are the media, they take so much out of context, and often when it comes to stuff such as computers, have no real idea what they're talking about. I mean, for example, BBC wrote an article about the PS3's cell processor, claiming that it was 10 times more powerful than any processor to date.
Yep, your right.

The media is the scum of the earth, right next to chavs.

All I can say is, there is no way anyone can release a perfect OS the first time, someone will always find a flaw. At least MS got on the problem quickly and got the problem fixed. I do think that the hackers should not go public with every single flaw they find. Seems to be a bit pompous...

QFT. Most infected people do not know they are infected. A customer of mine got a letter from their ISP (Time Warner) informing them that if they did not stop transmitting malware-infected spam, they were going to have their internet service disconnected.

They had NO clue. No firewall or AV program either.

Also wrong.

Publicizing the flaws in the O/S increases the level of awareness of those people that care enough to do something with the O/S. If it were not for the public release, the only people that would know about these flaws & how to exploit them would be

Microsoft (or maybe not, considering)
Oppressive and intrusive governments & government agencies, such as China and Homeland Security
The non-ethical hackers.

These so-called "ethical hackers" are the only people that we have to keep our computing safe. They are a check & a balance against all of the other groups mentioned above. In short, they are "us" in that they are more likely to have our interests first & foremost.

The only other group concerned with our computing security are the banks, and beyond on-line banking and credit card security, they also have no interest in our concerns.

ZING!

Why is it Brits can get away with using the term 'Chavs' without being flogged to death? If we use the stateside equivalent we have people with torches on our doorstep looking to draw and quarter us.
