I don't think they did that. I think it all kinda just fell into place that way. It's not like someone who has a better idea (I'm sure there are plenty of people with better ideas out there) can just build an OS and get everything to work for it. Their necks would be under m$'s heel. I mean think about it, there really is no changing this cycle we're in, is there?

Wolf3D was a dos program. It ran better without Windows running.

Windows 3.1 only took about 20-30 minutes to install... though it could take you hours playing with driver loading order and upper memory management so it could actually run.

Windows 95 was the first version of Windows that could take several hours to install, very dependent on your CPU speed and CD speed... CD drives were only 2-4x then.
