Microsoft would probably give companies access to the code to make new products Vienna compatible and leave it up to the company to make the older hardware compatible with new drivers

5 years is way too long in my view, and i think it might have contributed to the stiff reception of Vista - people grew real attatched to XP.
A new OS every 2-3 years would be great because about 2-3 years I get a new computer or do major upgrades so it would be perfect timing.

I really like how they are trying to make the OS small and not so bloated.

"Wake me up when this is released. 2009? Yea right. I remember when Vista was scheduled for a 2004 release. And that was AFTER it was delayed. I can't even recall what the original release date was supposed to be."

"Also did anyone else notice that a lot of the features for gamers that were supposed to be in Vista ended up on XBOX Live instead? Booooooerns"

I wouldn't mind if they had to break come compatibility with stuff to create a truly new and minimalistic OS. They could easily break compatibility with anything before 2000/XP and cut a lot of the fat off the OS

Microsoft gives companies access to the code to make new products XP and Vista compatible. They're called Application Program Interfaces.

What is your opinion about Vista, but what if it didn't have the backwards compatibility with XP?

They Need to stop running away from MS-DOS...that is why I think vista is kinda crap to me but different for other people....I hate How we are trying to get a good gaming system but then Overloaded with all of this Vista Processes that do not need to be there...I am just fine with my 100mb ram using Xp...but they need to go back and use a Windows ME or 95 Kernel...would work alot better...they need to delete everything and remake all this code...and it will work a lot better that any of there old OS's....just love how you can have a p2 300mhz and 128mb Windows 95 machine and will boot up in 3 secs or less while we have duel-core or even Quad-core and 1gb of ram or more and it takes aleast 1 min for Vista to start up FULLY and idle out where it is still not loading crap into Ram

Q: So is Vienna going to be a major Windows version?
A: No. Windows Vista was a major release, and Vienna will be a relatively minor, or interim, update. Microsoft is currently on a development path where every other Windows version is a major release.
Copying Apple again? lol (charging on "non-major" releases, what I'd like to call "Service Packs.")

I think they tried something very similar to this with Vista, starting from basically scratch...and you know what happened? People incessantly complained that it was taking WAAAYYY too long to make.
