I must admit that 5% on University is quite low. Having lived in my University's dorms from '04-'05 there was a much larger population hawking songs and movies. I'd say at least 20% of students were doing it.
44% seems quite high, but nonetheless a gross miscalculation on behalf of the MPAA.

forget tech savvy because even the dumbest people who only know how to browse the web easily pirate music and stuff with P2P. It's not hard to do, alot of people do it. I don't think I know one person in my school that doesnt do it.

![]() I too cannot comment on the overall percentage, but I've actually encountered less piracy here than I expected. I don't go to a technical school though, so as Duckie pointed out, that could explain part of it.

Keep in mind, there are plenty of 30 somethings out of college that pirate just as much, if not more. I think the entire pirating communty is based on extremes. Like, 20% of the people steal 80% of the stuff. In my experience, there are very few "casual" pirates. You either do it often or very rarely, not too many in between. I am not a great case study on the subject, though. I am just over 30 and almost all my friends are. Either they were into computers and know what they are doing or they buy a Dell and expect it to work when they need it. There are few people of my generation and beyond that have the ability to "casually" DL illegal materials.

Believe it or not the RIAA was able to calm down the piracy at my college A LOT with their law suites. I'm pretty sure that I heard my university (University of Nebraska-Lincoln) is one of the top watched networks in the country. Over the past 2 years the RIAA has sent over 100 letters to students saying they can either settle for $4000 or go to court for downloading illegal music. So, most students I know paid it rather than going to court and trying to be sued for like $2000 a song or whatever retarded crap the RIAA likes to charge. So basically, everyone I know that goes here waits until they go home from Christmas break and whatever to download music and stuff.

Why are you guys harping on BitTorrent downloads when most of those who pirate popular music and movies use LimeWire or Bearshare.

Maybe it's only 15% cos the other 85% get their friends to pop the movies on a disc for them :P
