Those people would rather spend the extra to get someone to mod their systems so they can pirate games.

If game developers are willing to lower price I'm sure people would actually start buying them. Or they can even try step-by-step payment. For example, you give the first mission for free as a demo, but if you want to go on, pay a few bucks, and if you want unlimited access to multiplayer, pay $10 or so. This way the consumers can choose how much to pay for a game, and if they don't like it, then leave it without paying for the second half of something they don't like. Apparently the traditional method of selling games for a high one-time price is failing.
That is a very good point. I have notived game prices getting stupidly high...and for what ? Thats what I want to know.

I can understand paying more for hardware...yeah thats fine. But games ?

Actually if you take inflation into account games are actually a little bit cheaper today. I remember some games still costing between $50-$70 through the late 80's and all through the 90's. There are a lot of games out there that fall in the $39.99, here in Canada anyways and thats a lot cheaper then some of them use to be if you take inflation into account.

Car lot: Yeah, I'm gonna take this car and drive it for a while, if I like it, I may return and pay for it....maybe.

It's called test driving from a car dealership, they don't charge you.

Movie Theatre: Let me in. I'm gonna watch this movie. If I like it (and I probably won't) I'll come back out afterwards and give you some money.

If you go into the movie, and leave 5 minutes after, go up to the cashier, and say that you hated the movie, and you want your money back. Do you think that they will give you your money back?

Restaurant: Bring me steak. Now, normally I wouldn't buy a steak, but since I can get it for free, bring me a steak. Maybe if I like it, I'll leave some money on the table.

Basically same thing I said in the above.

I share the same feeling many others on this topic have, make better games. COD4 and Bioshock, I've bought because I want to support that kind of development. The sims 2? Assassins Creed and Dark Messiah? F'em, those games are the cookie cutters of creativity and art, if such a paradix can even exist, but anyway, make better games theres only two on that list I would even consider playing.

If I kill someone, it is oK right? I mean, they are going to die anyways.

gimme a break. You can't justify stealing by stating that you never would have bought it. If you are not going to buy it, you don't deserve it. Creating different excuses as to why you are doing something wrong is called denial. Grow up and act like a responsible adult. Maybe someday some of you will take pride in you lives and not justify stealing " 'cause they have lots of money already and I is poor..." I swear, that is the downfall of todays societies. Nobody will take responsibility for their actions and feel entitled to have what everyone else has.

If you won't consider playing the other games then why even post that? This is about the legitimacy of pirating. If you steal those games then obviously they are worth playing at least once, so you should buy them or rent them.

Tell me friend, is there a company that will let me rent pc games? I don't own consoles because I think a dedicated gaming system is a waste of money.

Ok. Heated topic. I will try to convey a few points here.

The whole "I wouldn't have bought the game anyway" argument is partly valid. It by no means justifies piracy, but it does put the "money lost" issue in perspective. These companies are not actually losing nearly as much money as they claim due to piracy, since at least 75% of those pirates wouldn't have bought the game if a pirated copy weren't available. It doesn't make it right, but the figures are WAY off.

As for comparing piracy to eating in a restaurant, they are FAR from the same. People always want to compare piracy to other industries involving TANGIBLE goods. Pirating a game is NOT the same as stealing, say... a candy bar. When you steal something tangible, you are lowering the inventory of that item. Money must be spent to replace that item. When you pirate a game, you are stealing code... Something that can be sold millions of times over without changing the physical inventory (because there is none). It's like having sex with a prostitute and not paying for it. Sure, she's out some deserved money, but there is nothing to replace after the theft. It's not easy to make people feel as though they are actually stealing when they never physically took a tangible object from someone.

Now taking pirated software and selling it for a profit (I'm looking at you, China), THAT is a different story IMO.

Is piracy wrong? Yes. Is it hurting the industry? Undoubtedly. Are the figures wrong and being blown WAY out of proportion? You bet. Is software piracy the same thing as stealing tangible goods? Not by a long shot! Sorry for this last paragraph. It must be the political season making me communicate this way.

Property does not have to be tangible. Stealing is stealing, no matter how you justify it. By that logic, you could take an authors novel and sell it as your own. (the book is tangible, the story is not) or, how about a song? an idea? Since when does something of value need to be tangible?

I honestly can't believe some of the arguments here. Some of you really need to wake up. If you want to pirate or steal or whatever, thats fine, but be honest with yourself. Don't try to paint is as though you are justified in your actions. If you can't afford it, don't buy it. If you don't know if you will like it, don't buy it. Its called taking a chance and it happens all the time. I have a rack of games I bought and have been unhappy with. I DO NOT get all high and mighty and blame the company that made it or sold it. I DO NOT regret paying money for it. I choose to take the chance.
