more and more, these days on OCN people get fired up about piracy, i like the part that about company's not losing oney but not earning as much. only to the ones who are not pirating it seems as genocide....

aand that the prices need to lower... also i love how many people know the big names as RELOADEN, aXXo, FXG, Hoodlum, etc etc etc :P

keep it going !

You own the things you buy. I can sell or donate my textbook if I want to without breaking any laws. It only becomes illegal if I make a second copy of said book. And making a copy is only illegal if the publisher doesn't give you permission. I needed a math book that was sold out. The publisher was okay with us printing out a few extra copies. Yes, we actually contacted the publisher before doing so.

There are some things that are one time use only. A wow account is suppose to be like that. OEM windows can not be resold after used. However, if I wanted to give away my graphic card I could do so without breaking any laws. And they'll still get the warrant because it is a evga card.

Oh, and in before the lock. Otherwise you will not see this post.

Well since I just got a warning about legal piracy, i wont even bother talking about illegal piracy.

I will say, $50 bucks for game is high. If the game is fun, like COD4 is I will gladly pay it, hell I'd pay $60 for it.
But the majority of games aren't worth that price tag.

Another way to avoid it, is release DEMO's!
If I cant play a demo, or borrow it from a friend, chances are, i wont buy it till i know i like it.

Companies just need to get used to the fact that if they release an awesome game, it'll be pirated more. It's a shame, I'd hate to be a part of IW and see those numbers, but its a reality we live in, and it has been for years now.
Why IW is just now getting it's panties in a wad is beyond me.
It's not like the other COD games didn't get pirated.

Al Gore and John Kerry had the potential to become presidents of the US; they didn't though. In court an argument like yours would never stand a chance. "I had the chance to earn money, but they didn't buy my product because they didn't want to. I deserve monetary compensation from them because of this."
But we're not talking about presidents so quit spinning the topic. In a court my argument wouldn't stand a chance?! If you're so confident about your side then I suggest you write some of those companies whose software you pirated and tell them you did, and see how well your argument flies in court.

MY argument is not "I had the chance to earn money, but they didn't buy my product because they didn't want to. I deserve monetary compensation from them because of this."

My argument is: "I spent _____hrs making this product and _____$ making this product. The defendant clearly chose to illegally obtain a copy of my work, of which i am entitled compensation. Obviously the defendant found value in my services but failed to pay for it. Your honor, this is no different than if he went to Circuit City and stole it from the store. The only difference is that it costs me $5 less to get it stolen this way ( box, box art, cd, manual ).

For everyone who is sensitive over piracy or for everyone who is concerned about the overreaching effects of laws like the DMCA 1998 and its clones, i would recommend 3 fantastic reads by my teacher and leading US scholar on the subject of Intellectual Property named Lawrence Lessig. OK most of you probably know him by now but for the ones who do not the books are these:
1) Code and Other Laws of Cyberspace
2) The Future of Ideas
3) Free Culture
Free Culture and Code V2 are available freely on the Net. Lessig struck a deal with the publishers and convinced them that by freely distributing his work, could have a positive effect on sales for his books.
For the ones who read them, i am sure you will enjoy them and i am more than positive that you will eventually buy them. You want to pay for quality at the end of the day right? It is junk you are reluctant to throw your money at.
I am a lawyer so i am against piracy too; but i am also against overreaching laws, laws made without public values in mind, laws enacted without any deliberation, and even worse laws enacted by the MPAA and RIAA who are bound to be biased since they do it with a view to their profit above anything else.
Also showing children video tapes of dogs sniffing pirated material, or making kids downloading content appear as criminals makes me recall WW2 propaganda methods or even worse it makes me think that MPAA and RIAA are trying to terrorize the public. The thing is we live in democratic countries not under some form of military regime if i am right. Also I am sure there are more civilized ways to educate our children or - even - ourselves about the right of creators to get paid for their work. Brainwash does not encourage constructive thinking, it just numbs your brain.

I know i am a bit off topic but piracy should not be a yes or no issue. There are fundamental values involved not only from the creator's point of view but also from the consumer's or researcher's right (or lack of it, all depends on the laws that have been enacted) to access a copyrighted work. And the laws nowadays are obviously one-sided i am afraid.

Also forums are open and democratic spaces where one's opinion should be heard. I guess in such a democratic open space talking of such things should be OK. Unless someone is trying to sell or link or promote illegal material there shouldn't be a problem with talking about such an important issue.

Remember, this is a thread about video game piracy, and not music piracy (which I have vastly different opinions on).

Most PC games have demo's. All the games I play are either demos, or ones I went out and bought. Through playing demos, I either go out and buy the full version (like with ET:QW), or find it doesn't excite me enough to fork out for the full version (Crysis, C&C3).

There is NO excuse to pirate games. Not a single one. If the price is too high, then don't buy it. Through economics, the price will fall if not enough people buy the game. If you simply must have the game, then go 2nd-hand, or wait a few months for the price to drop.

also thealmighty not having a demo does not justify obtaining an illegal copy of someone elses work.

I understand that pirating does kill some profit for these companies but you must realize that the one million people who torrented the game weren't going to pay for it in the first place. Oh and id say at least 25% of these people who torrent these games go out later and buy a legit copy in order to play online etc. You guys probably think I don't care because of what I just said, but I do.
