You gotta see things from the customers' point of view, especially if you're a company producing these products (that goes for m$, being the OS maker, as well as the computer manufacturer's).
Mine was $470 total, case and all (No monitor, tho) and it runs great... I can see the case where you would need a decent PC for that, but since nearly everyone can write it off as a business expense nowadays and desktops get cheaper and cheaper, it shouldn't be a big deal to get a Vista-capable PC.

I don't see any reason why Vista would not be doing just fine.

Afterall, it's Windows, and MS is telling everyone to buy it. It's inevitable that a good chunk of people will obey.

I'm just going to use this for all the rest who quoted me...

One could build himself a vista computer for $500 and it would run decently. I'm talking about what the average joe is going to buy, though. That is, an HP, toshiba, etc., a computer bogged down with adware to subsidize the price. For example, my dad's compaq, which happened to BSOD 4 days after purchase. It had vista for 6 or 7 months before we finally got fed up and wiped it for XP (this is not an XP vs vista argument; it's rather a manufacturer OEM vista subsidized by adware vs a clean vista, which you get if you buy it yourself.)

Something really funny, Vista ACTUALLY seems to run just as good as Ubuntu and Mandriva if not better on my OLD Athlon XP 2000 machine that I use for backup file storage.

..And with Vista and XP both selling so well, Microsoft twiddles its thumbs as it decides to further inflate the monopolistic software market with yet another operating system to be released in only a year's time..

That IS really funny

As long as you have the RAM, it should run decently at least.

We sell an acer desktop, athlon X2 4400+ 2 gigs of ram, 320gig HD, dvd burner, vista premium for $399, and it runs the OS fine. Your dad that compaq (I'm familiar with it athlon 64, 512mb ram) because he was being cheap, at the time he could've bought an acer dual core with at least a gig of ram or another hp or compaq with a dual core cpu for like $50 more. Or he could've bought another gig of ram for like $10. Manufacturers have always sold under spec'd machines, emachines and compaq use to sell an XP machine with 128MB of ram.
