Or he could've bought another gig of ram for like $10. Manufacturers have always sold under spec'd machines, emachines and compaq use to sell an XP machine with 128MB of ram.
Eh... The point is: why do I have to buy these upgrades or a better computer when all other OSs can run better on the same system?

I slapped XP on her and she was good as gold. No spontaneous BSOD 4 days later, no more 5 min bootup, no more 2 min to load a browser, no more 5-10 min to shut down.

I suppose I coulda even done Linux, but I figured I might use the computer to play a game when I have friends over or something haha

Vista runs perfectly fine the people that have problems have a crap or outdated computer. Really i have had very little to no problems while using Vista 64 bit.

I don't care! If the competition can do amazing things on a "crap or outdated computer" and windows can't, then we have a problem! Prime example: Compiz-Fusion. Anyone want to address the issue of why Linux can run Compiz-Fusion on a Pentium 2 with 256MB RAM and an MX400 graphics card and the mighty expensive vista can't??

Vista is great, but am I the only one who can see a problem with this? Or is crappily coded software fine as long as it gives us an excuse to spend more money on more hardware?

Nah your excuse is just a cop out, its probably the most irritating thing I hear in retail all the time "I bought the cheapest thing you guys sell and I am not happy with it." The example machine your father purchased was the absolute cheapest thing compaq had out in the retail market at the time, and there was also an acer with 2x the specs for the exact same money (pentium D 920, 1 gig of ram) It came with vista because that was the current OS for the time, XP being discontiuned. Manufacturers have always released computers with the bare minimum specs to sell product. Like I said in my previous post emachines released a machine during the release of XP, it had 128mb of ram and a celeron, and was the cheapest pc in the store at the time. Guess what? It ran like crap to. To sum it up your assumption that most consumers buy the cheapest computer that stores sells is totally incorrect. CHEAP people buy the CHEAP computers, the majority of customers out there will spend a little more money if they are explained why the $400 pc is better then the $200 one. You get what you pay for to some extent always, and this does not just apply to PC's.

I believe it's doing fine. My friends always laughed at me saying that Vista sucked and silly claims like that, but now the majority of them have switched. It just needed time, and now it's in gear.

Not yet. I luff vista. The only thing thats killing the experience is gaming with a wireless network. Microsoft is doing jack **** about it saying that we shouldn't be gaming on a wireless network anyway.

That wasn't the statement I was disputing, your blanket statement that consumers all buy the cheapest computers that big box stores sell, and that none of them run vista properly because they are under spec'd, which is entirely untrue (where are you getting this $1000 pc number from? A $399 brand name pc will run vista fine today.) most consumers own mid range systems, so basically according to your original argument it seems that all these cheapo's are to blame for vista's bad press. Your linux statement (which is a different statement) is missing a lot of info, ie what version of linux and if the OS is really considered "usable"" state. If it was something like say Fedora 5, that could easily be compared to something like windows 2k etc. It probably runs fine on a 7 year old machine because they are using code thats 7 years old, the gerforce 2 cards only support version 1.x of the opengl api from my knowledge. So the answer to your question is, because 7 year old hardware works great with 7 year old software!
