The microsoft corporation is supposed to be dedicated to bringing us revolutionary software. They are a business, and this is their goal. I would expect something like aero and the vista OS itself to be able to run on hardware that a Linux box can run on.

I just don't really believe that there is an excuse for it this time. Like the title says (since I think most of us have lost sight of it), this is about the promise that windows 7 will have lower requirements. Hopefully we get what we want to see, because we all would like to see an OS that performs better than vista, don't we?

Maybe because she's not smart enough to go to add/remove programs and click on a check box?

How is it possible? Wine.

Better solution? Go to add/remove programs and search for a native Linux program.

If you're talking about games, certainly stick with windows.

Btw, I'm not trying to promote Linux over windows here; I'm simply answering your questions

I agree. However, don't you think that if Linux and OSX can run on fairly to quite old systems, the multi-hundred dollar windows vista should have been able to do the same?

Vista runs great on fairly new systems, but the fact that it won't run on older systems proves that the OS should have been optimized better. The fact that they DIDN'T, well I'll let you draw your own conclusions.

I agree. You shouldn't run vista if you don't have 1GB. I also agree that RAM is cheap. But why excuse poorly coded software just because you can get the excessive hardware it requires? We're enthusiasts here, all about optimization, right? I would hope that this love for optimization doesn't only apply to hardware. That's all I'm trying to say.
I will reply to some of your post. The idea that Linux is less user friendly has been around for a very long time. Windows created intuitive OS structure with 95. The fact remains even now I can't load up Ubuntu and do everything I want with it. I tend to uninstall Linux every time I try it because it's too messy.

I agree that Vista COULD have been optimized better but it runs fine as it is so then whats the problem? I can turn that statement back around and say "as an enthusiast, I expect linux to run all my games and programs properly".

Another point you made is the fact that Microsoft has many employees with high level degrees. True, but you know as well as I, that there are many enthusiasts working on Linux (might I add far more than there are working on Windows) and as such these programmers most likely also hold the same degrees or are extremely proficient.

I don't believe Microsoft ever proclaimed to be the best at writing software, but they do proclaim to be the best at making that software for the masses and marketing it so it has maximum software support. They have achieved this.

Sorry guys; I can't answer. I've been threatened and censored.

If you like, I'd be happy to continue the (what has been civil) discussion in a PM.

Do you mean all of your Windows games and programs?

Agreed. The one thing that Windows has going for it above all others is third party support.

Well, most good exclusive Linux games can't be bought at the store because they're all open source (But if you made the argument that I'm grasping at straws, I'd agree. However - in the near future Valve will be releasing Source engine games for linux according to Phoronix)

And for your second challenge; Compiz Fusion. But for something thats actually practical rather than just pretty, any of the package managers such as Synaptic. I feel that is a huge advantage of the linux and BSD systems - the ability to use one central program to install, update, and remove most any piece of software on the system.

System: Linux exclusive? I think so.

Chipp answers these questions very well, but I wasn't even talking about capabilities. I just think that it is unreasonable for people to criticize linux for not being able to run windows programs. The fact that it can at all is amazing - it is no small feat to reverse engineer the functionality of a modern proprietary operating system. Criticizing it for not perfectly emulating all the bloat that is windows is out of line IMO

Points taken

I apologize for being a little critical of Linux but I never found it very amusing to use

So many Microsoft haters yet so many xbox 360 LIVE userbase. Vista is great, don't hate--go back and use Windows 98 or 95 since you guys like to use old stuff to suit your old pc...

if Windows 7 turns out to be worse than vista is as a memory hog, then i expect Bill gates to be out of the country by the time every one figures out the truth about windows 7 .
