Right now I'm using 563 with 5 open OCN tabs, two F@H console clients, and installing GRID Demo.

And to all you talking about using your free ram, what happens when you start up a game and you don't have enough free memory left?
thats like saying that the US should stop stockpiling gasoline? I think its a good idea.

Common amount of memory when XP was released was 256mb
Common amount of memory when Vista was released was 1GB
Now 2GB is the norm with 3GB being advertised in huge letters.

Seriously, by the time Windows 7 is released 6GB will be the norm with high end/gamers with 8-16GB.

If you have the RAM why not put it to use?

Superfetch loads programs into cache.. programs request memory (CS3, CoD4, CAD, etc) and superfetch scales down to accommodate the program.

After i exit CoD4 maxed the memory usage is usually around 400mb after it unloads the game.

Please dont bash something you clearly have little knowledge on.

That's what I'm thinking. Pentium D/Pentium 4 was probably mainstream, along with some sort of integrated graphics.

We're talking about mainstream for everyone, mind you, not mainstream for US. Let's remember that the majority of vista users are not enthusiasts. It's pointless just to talk about ourselves here.

Pentium Dual-Cores are more common than C2Ds. For us, no, for most people, yes.

While Vista and Superfetch have been great for me, I still have to admit that Vista itself does use quite a bit of memory. Probably a fair amount more than it needs than if it were optimized better. I am well aware that in order to take advantage of Superfetch, you obviously need the extra space to begin with. For users like me, it matters not. But for users with older machines and less RAM, there can be space issues. IMHO, Vista could (and probably should) have been cut down at least somewhat to use less RAM, and leave more for Superfetch (and everything else). There are quite a few Vista tweak guides out there that show why it's generally using more system resources than absolutely necessary.

Don't get me wrong. I still like Vista, quite a bit. It's just not perfect.

Exactly. In fact, most consumer mainstream computers are sold with E6550 processors these days and the Dual Core processors are relegated to the budget side.

The computers we have in our library (Dell) have E6750s in every single one.

Another thing I'd like to point out is that Microsoft feel they can experiment with ideas that utilize more ram because it is generally accepted that you have a contemporary PC. Don't come in here with a P4 561 and 512MB of ram and expect to run Vista perfectly. Something like my PC is what is normal these days and I have no problems with Vista at all.
