Listen, I've become a rather big Vista backer, but IMHO there is no good reason why Vista itself (excluding Superfetch) should use as much RAM as it does. I feel I can say that with confidence. Don't get me wrong - it runs well for me. But just take a look at any Vista Tweak guide, and you'll realize there are a lot of things Vista is doing that aren't needed for 99% of computer users. And that's just for starters.
I've built and worked on numerous computers. Considering most new computers come with at least 1GB of RAM, Vista shouldn't have a large problem there. But judging from experience, A LOT of people use older computers - ones with less than 1GB (and there are a ton out there), and they simply won't be able to run Vista on a 'decent' level, IMO. Yes, not even Home Basic (w/o Aero). And keep in mind, the vast majority of people do not know how to upgrade system components. At all. Now, this will obviously make it hard for people to switch to Vista on older systems. Aero also experiences lags on older integrated GFX chipsets. But on most new OEM machines (even low end), you shouldn't have much of a problem. I've seen Aero run on current integrated GFX chipsets. It performs well IMO. But as THG has said, just because current hardware can handle Vista's excessive memory load (again, excluding Superfetch), doesn't mean Vista isn't using more memory than is needed; or that it's coded superbly. So sure, Vista will perform well enough on new systems. But I guess my point here is; if MS wants people to switch to Vista (or another future OS), they're going to have to optimize it. I don't know a lot about coding - but looking at Linux, there is obviously room for improvement. And I don't know why there hasn't been enough.

Anyway, I look forward to this, MS can make good products, given they have the time and this is the perfect chance to them to start from scratch. Vista was made in 2 years, they have a bit more for 7, so this might be AWESOME....Might not
