Default [Information Week]Brits Want Microsoft Office 2007 Expelled From Classrooms

Source
Quote:
The agency that governs educational technology in the U.K. has filed a formal complaint against Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) with the European Union.
The British Educational Communications and Technology Agency (BECTA) contends that Microsoft has failed to support open standards in its Office 2007 desktop productivity suite. "In the context of the education system this can result in higher prices and a range of other unsatisfactory effects," BECTA said in a statement Tuesday.
If you do not like the product don't buy it. When, did the Europeans become such whinny little . . . gah!

I know it's ridiculous isn't it. And why is it in the news? The news is so full of poo these days.

I find that everyone seems to moan. If I was Bill Gates or some of the programmers that worked on Vista, done a great job (in my opinion) and all people do is whine about it. I'd be so tempted to just tell them to f off and write their own OS lol.

Oh and the UK hardly reflects the EU btw, no country really does cos it's so big, but if anything the UK seems seperate. Don't judge Europe cos of the UK!

It's just the new file format, means we have to download the compatibility packs for the machines running older versions of Office. You have to pay IT people to do that and they ask for a lot of money. British people are tight and will try and save where ever they can.

No offense to any UK folks here, but those education technology folks need to lighten up.

Wow, it introduces new file formats, yet is completely backwards compatible with Word 2003, that is really terrible.

Install the converter tool on your next image and move on, thats what happened at my college, simple and easy fix.

Also, if the EU actually accepts this complaint... well I have simply lost faith in them.

EDIT: just read the article again. They are mad MS introduced a new format, and are mad that it doesn't support open office stuff? They then go on to talk about future purchases:

Quote:
"they're advised to take a long looked at alternatives based on Linux and other open source products, such as the OpenOffice.org desktop package. "
EU you are just getting pathetic, it is one thing to assist the underdog, it is another to openly support it and strongly recommend it.

my school also has MS07 and they recently upgraded the library PCs which are P4s with 256mb of RAM. They reformatted the PC's and upgraded the RAM to 1GB and now MS07 runs perfectly on it and the PCs are a lot faster now.
