this is definitely a terrible tragedy, the girl obviously had emotional problems to begin with and her parents are looking to blame someone else for this, but they should look at themselves, they could have gotten her professional help and kept her off the myspace, period..

OK, so let me ask you this, if this was a man having a fake online relationship with this girl.. would they give him the same sentence? No I bet they'd charge him with sexual harassment and label him as a pedophile even if he was just pulling a prank like this mother was. This is still a adult having a relationship with a younger teenager, fake or not, its unacceptable. She made the girl believe she was real and the girl believe she was having a relationship with someone, which was actually a adult.

Maybe charged for murder is to much, but she should atleast be put on the sexual offenders list. A adult should never put themselves in a situtation like this mother did, she does not have something right in her head.

I'd be OK with her being charged for sexual related charges or murder charges. Although the sexual related charges would probably be more fitting for her now that I thought about it a bit more.

However if she knew the girl suffered from depression and whatnot then I think the punishment should be more severe than just some sexual related charges.

The internet is available to our computers so technically it does affect computing technology. What happens on the net affects almost everyone. As you can see there were some responses that hit close to home with some of the other posters and they are members of OCN. Also I don't know about you, but I rather know about some of the crazy things people do out there so I can be prepared mentally if some similar happens when I'm around.

Did I ever say that was ok? I'm just arguing the "prank" in this case can't be the only reason the girl took her own life. Even if it is, that would be like if I called up Comcast Cust. Service dept, complained about them overcharging, but was a complete ass, made the service rep feel like ****, it pushes them over the edge and they kill themselves. Am I at fault? Would I be prosecuted? I understand the mom went out of her way to develop an "internet relationship", but still, this couldn't have been the only factor pushing this girl to the edge.
