Torrents are not a bad thing.
Copyrighted media being distributed via torrents is illegal, but so is moving stolen goods in the car. This doesn't mean you stop cars.
Stopping privacy measures is insane. The Internet would stop functioning without SSH - it's a staple for web servers.

As to pirating, the fact of the matter is, they need to make it cheap and easy enough to get a hold of games that people won't bother torrenting, then (most) people wouldn't bother with the extra hassle.
I'm not saying pirating is right, but it shows there is something wrong with the current business model.

If they sued TPB, they'd have to sue every other search engine around.

Also, recently software has been released that allows the trackerless finding of torrents, from peers, so people would just use that.

Developing a game takes a lot of money. Even if you make a good game $20 people will still pirate cause its free. People have the mindset: "Why pay for it when I can get it for free?"

Torrent users aren't ruining the internet, it's those behind this bill, it's the greed of the old IP model, it's people like you who blame torrents as an easy scapegoat.

I don't see why they do this kind of thing... they're still making immense profits, and it's not like there was any significant change in how pirates do things.

I still think piracy originated from the big companys' greed. Had they not tried to get such a huge profit margin off everything, they might've never triggered it.

Piracy exists because of the same reason "counterfeit" shirts exist.
The brands charge a LOT for no real reason. My mom works in a kid clothing company - each shirt costs them under 50 cent, and they sell like hotcakes for 20-40 Euro in Europe.

The licensing fees aren't a big deal too with the amount of shirts they're selling...oh, and them "manufacturing" the shirts in China just goes to show that non-technological counterfeits aren't any less quality than the originals.

This is good news and bad news. Bad news is for pirates. Good news is maybe it will save the PC gaming market. Then again, it goes to say, "I don't wanna spend 50 bucks on something that might suck."
