if it comes down to it, microsoft will release a patch for IPv6 for XP Pro users, since it will probably cease supporting home edition in 2010 anyways and will cease support for XP Pro a year or two later.

There goes the "we dont need vista" argument if you want to use the internet for much longer.
Installing SP3 to XP includes IPv6.

All new MBs come with IPv6 support... and jeez, who cares? This is old news. Good thing they remembered mentioning it now!

I don't think it will have much impact on the average Joe. The OS should just automatically switch to IPv6 mode when you're assigned a v6 address.

No; because then IPV6 wouldnt work on "older" controllers.

I'm thinking that IPv6 will only be used in external environments. Really, there isn't much need for IPv6 in LANs, to eliminate the hastle I'm guessing that big router manufacturers are going to support V6 - V4 packet translation, making it possible to use V6 on the outside and v4 on the inside. There might be some problems with MAC address translations, but it would make for a smoother migration.

LOL. IPv6 comes built in with XP. The only difference is that it's not installed by default, you have to add it manually under your LAN properties. And apparently SP3 also adds it automatically.

interesting idea, but w/e.

Also, if they were smart, they could set 0.x.x.x.x to equal the current x.x.x.x by default so that IPv4 would be compatible with IPv6. Unless they're already planning on that?
