It would definitely take humongous chunk out of the Windows market share.

Until people figured out that OSX sucks just as bad as Vista when run on cheap hardware. Then they will realize that OSX really isn't that much better than Windows.

I kinda like that Vista is plug and play with almost everything.
Its a double edged sword though, because it leads to a slightly larger footprint... but with HDDs and RAM as cheap as they are right now it doesn't really matter(especially on a desktop, laptops are a different story).

Well, seems that its going to be a good OS...

Edit: Rep+ for you.
... And they could start and AMD build. Sounds like a lot of work, but much of the code for it could be borrowed from FreeBSD. Or, secondly, as you are well aware Windows and many Linux distros only comes in x64 and x84. Mac OS X could offer a generic AMD/Intel x64 and x84 build...

I obviously don't always agree with everything you say. But, in this case, I agree completely (I don't think that Vista sucks, but I haven't tried running it on low-end hardware).

It's not as simple as that. I run various Linux distros on crappy old computers I have laying around and it runs 100 times faster and more stable than Windows could on the same hardware (yes I run them with full desktop GUI's). I suspect OS X wouldn't be that much different.

There's more to an OS than the hardware it runs on.

The problem is that as much as drivers change as it is, it would've been a much better model for MS to stick with basic drivers to get you up and running and the rest of the driver base is online once you're installed, that way you don't bloat the OS's with ton's of drivers that are obsolete the day you release it.

Further even with Vista I still have to install most of my mobo drivers and drivers for pretty much all my other hardware so its kind of useless to begin with.

Thats funny because Linux takes 5 minutes to boot on my computer compared at less than 30 seconds for Windows.

Welcome to the world of Linux. It is the perfect OS, only if you get it right. Which of course, requires a degree to do.
