Default [TS] AVG update disguises LinkScanner traffic as IE6

Quote:
Earlier this month, AVG was pointed to as the source of a new bandwidth hog on the Internet with one of their fancier anti-malware tools causing a huge jump in traffic on popular sites. At least admins were able to identify what was going on and filter out the nonsense traffic under this scenario. However, AVG has made things more difficult with a recent update in which its LinkScanner program disguises itself as IE6.

That's an unfortunate step for network administrators looking for an easy way to filter out the bogus traffic coming from the tool. According to AVG, the steps were to make the program more difficult for malware sites to detect and thus defeat the purpose of LinkScanner altogether. They still claim that admins will be able to filter it out for statistics, but that won't solve the problem of excess traffic generated from this practice.

Not only is it annoying for users, but it's annoying for websites as well... Great. I'm glad I removed that feature.

Removed it as soon as I learned what it did....

AVG really did drop what they used to be with their 8th version..

Especially the fact that they forced users to update to 8... THAT really annoyed me.

AVG was great for years, but it seams as though when they went to a "Paid" version, it has gone downhill. Their virus detection Severely lacks in accuracy and being current for things. And lacking in determining "In the wild" viruses. AVG has zero of my support these days. For free anti-virus I have been recomending Avast for years now to my clients, and zero complaints....ZERO. And when a "good" software is doing something such as diguising itself as IE6, even on the intent of trying to fool malware.....it's not only questionable on the "ethics" , but just bad business practice.

Yes I use NOD32 as well, The Smart Security Suite because I need a good firewall. Avast is best free anti-virus, NOD32 best paid anti-virus....bottom line hehe.

Don't forget about Avira, better than Avast in my opinion.

It's sad to see AVG sink this low. I'm glad I switched all of the computers that I manage to Avira...
