Why didn't you expect this? They've been talking about the features that weren't in DX 10 and the ones that Nvidia won't implement in DX 10.1. We've been talking about the PhysX and other stream computing thing. Often these discussions have pointed to DX 11. We'll have to wait and see what features they will have ready for this spec, but I expect a more expansive and generic implementation of shader units. That follows the direction we saw in DX 10 with the use of Unified shaders.

It's still a fair bit off, they're just doing a preliminary unveiling. It's not like it'll be released in January.

i have to say, if this comes out within a year it might make dx10 a complete failure.

It's not really the right venue. It's more suited to be announced at some kind of developer or technical conference.

Once upon a time, code developers took their time about things. Too bad they're taking a piss on this one. DirectX 10 is still maturing, and Microsoft can't wait to outsource another whole generation of GPUs in order to sell either software or hardware. It makes you wonder what kind of cut they get from third party sources that sell peripherals that order the forcing of Windows Updates or drivers for those components..... whether or not it was somewhere premeditated beforehand to maximize the profit for all companies.

Why couldn't they just put Dx11 features into Dx10?

It's more profitable to bring forth new builds than to work on an already stable platform. The newer the better, sometimes.
