They need to do something before its to late, adware/spam/the works should be consider the same as viruses IMHO.
The CAN-SPAM act was passed to fight spam. That's why most (should be all by law) spam has an unsubscribe link. There have been a couple of prosecutions.

Most of the bad viruses around these days (Storm and the like) create botnets. The botnets are vast networks of zombie comps that are used primarily for DDOS attacks and to send mass amounts of spam.

Yeah, there's some ridiculous stats if you look into botnets.

Actually kinda interesting if you think about it.

I've heard while clicking the "unsubscribe link" technically (is supposed to) stop the spam coming from whomever sent it; but by doing so your address is often effectively deemed "active" by the sender and your email address is subsequently given (or put on a list, then sold?) to multiple other spammers. Is there any truth to this?

Pretty much how it works, they buy your e-mail, once you unsubscribe to them, they sell you to another one or more and so on.

Actually the counterargument is

Besides, it doesn't solve foreign spamming.
